As race organisers we have a responsibility to our participants but also to the environment. Here are some measures we are taking to reduce the environmental impact of the race…
In previous years we have supplied plastic race bags for personal belongings to be brought from the start areas to the finish area. We will no longer provide these bags and are asking participants to use their own bags for this purpose. This alone will remove approximately 2500-3000 plastic bags from the event every year.
For 2024 we will again have a wooden medal instead of metal.
Event t-shirts are not included for 2024. Since 2002, there have been an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 t-shirts produced for the event, which comes at a huge environmental cost. We understand that for many people the race top is important so they will be available to purchase separately if desired through our Dolmen Sports Shop.
It is very hard to completely escape the use of plastics at events but we have significantly reduced the amount we generate by making sure that medals are not delivered individually in plastic bags, switching to biodegradable water bottles (even though we still aim to collect 100% of the bottles used by participants) and using recycled materials where possible.
