I had a very slow run due to a pre race illness but didn't mind as it gave me an excuse to have even more time on the lovely course and to chat to some of my fellow participants along the way. will have to come back next year to bury the demons!

I wish to congratulate Ray and all the team on the organisation of such a wonderful event. I enjoyed the marathon very much. Thanks a million. It was the most beautiful race I have ever run in my life. The landscape and the weather were so nice !!!!

The most unlikely phrase to hear during the Connemarathon
Sat, 30/04/2011Will You Marry Me?
We've seen a lot of happy faces over the years, but none as happy as the smiling couple Darren and Sonia who got engaged to be married at Mile 25. Having conquered the 'Hell of the West' on Sonia's debut marathon, Darren was on another mission. We'll let him tell the story... "Ahead lay the hell of the west, and the first sign of a headwind, which prompted a heads down battle against the elements upwards."
"Nerves were starting to get to me, as Sonia knew she was going to finish, and with a better than predicted time, she was in finishing mode by now. The top of the hill came and went, and I bottled it, I just couldn't find the right spot. I scanned the downhill, looking for an appropriate proposal point, as though a man should be standing with a sign pointing, 'here's a good spot to propose, just here'. Well, the sign for 25 arrived and we had just passed 5hrs, so we were on the last mile, and almost home. I stopped at the side of the road, told Sonia I had something in my back pack which would get us to the end, and bent down to rummage in the bottom compartment for the ring. I told her to close her eyes, then uttered the immortal words, to which the answer was YES, thankfully.
After the disbelief and tears, we still had a mile or so to run, so we finished this as an engaged couple.
You would think that by now, 2 weeks later ,the dust would have settled a bit, and life would be a tad quieter, but not a bit of it. Our wedding plans are in full swing, with a date set for March 29th next year, and a honeymoon planned for....you guessed it.Connemara!
So,in the last 3 years, I completed my first ultra, first 100miler, and Sonia completed her first half, then full, and we got engaged, all in Connemara. Thanks for providing a race that holds all these memories, and will continue for many races in the future... and a honeymoon!"
Congratulations!
